The anti-corruption raids....
It's high time somebody started looking at corruption. It is arguably the number one malaise in our country and possibly the biggest stumbling block to having a vibrant democracy and a vibrant economy.
It is laughable that Rs 16 lakh was recovered from the house of the the bombay income tax commissioner. Each one of us knows at least a few government officials who have amassed ten times that much.
The government of India needs to declare a 'war on corruption' and should fight it on many fronts. To begin with, use the citizens of India to catch these vermin. Pass a whistle blower act and make it worthwhile for whistleblowers by paying them 25% of any taxes or money that is recovered and establish a national hotline or a web-site for citizens to call in. At the same time, the government seriously needs to take a look at reducing the size of the government and making sure that the salaries of the government employees is comparable with those in the private sector. Next, enforce the election laws in the country or pass new ones to prevent unscrupulous criminals from getting elected to public offices. Last and most important, pass a constitutional amendment to separate the legislative body from the executive body. No MLA or MP should become a minister. Let the chief minister or the prime minister pick the most qualified for each of the ministries and let these legislators oversee these ministries.
